CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Henry Townshend
Canon: Silent Hill: The Room
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: Escape ending.
Number: 021
Setting:
South Ashfield Heights (about half a day's drive to Silent Hill); Walter's otherworld. ( Have this here wiki link, and this one, this one is good too. )
History:
Much of Henry's past is unaccounted for. It's given that approximately two years ago, he moved into room 302 in South Ashfield Heights because he was simply "drawn" to the room. There's no mention as to why he felt compelled to move here, but somehow the place just felt right in Henry's eyes. He had no idea that the spirit of a serial killer named Walter was lingering and that room 302 was Walter's "mother."
So Henry lived in this apartment for two years; casually saying hi to neighbors, but for the most part he stayed to himself. In fact, when things began to get weird, no one seemed to notice that he hadn't come out of his room for a few days. Prior to his entrapment, Henry began to have strange and vivid nightmares. Some times they were dreams of a small town called Silent Hill -a place he'd visited only a few times- but most of them were that of his apartment being haunted by the ghosts. Decaying walls, bloodstained carpets, the souls of tortured victims.
Then one day when he thought he woke up from his dream, Henry realized he was in a waking nightmare. The windows were jammed, the phone was out of service, and the door had several chains attached to it with a simple letter stating "Don't go out!" -Walter.
For five days, Henry was trapped like this. With his food supply low and his sanity starting to feel the effects, a massive hole in his bathroom suddenly appeared on that day. He had no choice, there nowhere else to go, so Henry bravely entered that hole and found himself in a hellish world of Walter's otherworld. He wakes up in a Subway station and comes across a woman by the name of Cynthia. Both of them appear to be trapped, but unlike Henry, Cynthia carelessly plays around thinking that at any moment she'll wake up from this "dream." Agreeing to find a way out of the subway, the two are soon separated and when they meet up again, Henry finds Cynthia mortally wounded. When asking if this is still a dream, Henry says it is and Cynthia dies in his arms.
Henry then finds himself waking up in his apartment, the sounds of an ambulance nearby, and when he looks out his window, he sees a gurney being lifted from the subway entrance. There's no doubt in his mind that it's Cynthia's body. He soon enters the hole again, which appears to be growing larger, and wakes to find himself in a forest this time. While traveling, he comes across a man named Jasper and a strange little boy. While Jasper was willing to talk to him -mostly about a ritual and The Devil- the little boy runs away. Henry makes his way to the Wish House Orphanage where he meets Jasper again, and in exchange for some chocolate milk, he's promised a key to get inside. Once he does enter, Henry's search is stopped short by the horrible screams of Jasper and Henry comes to watch as the man has been set on fire and burns to death.
Again, Henry wakes up in his apartment and the hole is still there, so once more he enters. He ventures into two more places. One is that of a prison where he meets a man by the name of Andrew and learns of Walter who was obsessed with a ritual called "The Descent of the Holy Mother." Unfortunately, after returning to Andrew after some time, Henry finds the man drowned. The next place Henry goes is an apartment close to his own and meets another man by the name of Richard. Learning of a previous renter of room 302, Joseph, Henry is also warned to watch out for the little boy he'd been seeing. By the time Henry meets with Richard again, the man has been electrocuted and dies shortly after trying to warn him of something.
Back in his apartment, Henry is able to to get to Eileen (thinking that she may be the next victim) but when he gets here, she's been severely wounded and he'd been too late in saving her. But that little boy he'd been warned about had stopped her from being murdered. When he wakes up in his own bed again, a new hole appears -the old one in the bathroom had mysteriously closed- and finds himself in a hospital where Eileen has been taken. After being attacked by demonic-looking nurses, Henry is able to find and rescue Eileen. But the two are trapped in Walter's otherworld and find themselves reliving the previous worlds that Henry had been thrown into. On top of that, the ghosts of the former people he'd met; Cynthia, Jasper, Andrew, and Richard are all disgruntled spirits chasing them down. Finding a dairy, the two are greeted by the ghost of Joseph who tells them more about Walter and his plans. Henry also learns that the little boy is in fact a younger version of Walter himself.
For the last time, Henry wakes up in his room, but this time he has a key to the chains that kept him inside for all those days. He's able to finally escape... into another surreal nightmare.
Traveling the halls of his own apartment that has gone to Hell, Henry comes to the know that the corpse of Walter is still in his room. Returning one last time, Henry is greeted by his corpse and descends down a hole into a room with a strange monstrous contraption and Eileen slowly walking toward it. Henry has finally come to face Walter in one last confrontation.
Henry then learns of the 21 sacraments and how he comes to play a part in the ritual. Being the last of the sacraments (Eileen being the 20th) "The Receiver of Wisdom" Henry has been forced to bear witness the last of Walter's ritualistic murders and obtain all the information needed to earn his own title. Once the ritual is complete and all 21 souls have been taken, Walter can therefore be reunited with mother, or room 302.
Given Henry's traits, it's safe to say he was the best suited to be the last sacrament and thus is why he'd been thrown into Walter's otherworld and witness to the murders. But luckily for Henry and Eileen, they both survived the ordeal and successfully defeated Walter. Escaping his apartment, Henry makes it out into the real world and reunites with Eileen at the hospital. It appears that the two are free of the horrors that they faced and Walter has passed on.
Personality:
Unlike most of the protagonists in Silent Hill, Henry shows no signs of having any repressed memories or suffering a traumatic event. He has no relation to Silent Hill either, other than having visited the town a few times. Plainly put, he's just a normal guy who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. However, due to his artistic abilities and detail to attention, this is probably the sole reason why Walter was drawn to him and therefore picked him to be the last in the Sacraments. Henry could've very well been manipulated to live in room 302.
One of Henry's most prominent characteristics is his quiet demeanor. An introvert, he doesn't particularly spend a lot of time conversing with people, (very few of the tenants in his apartment actually know of him) and this might give others the impression that he's closed off. While he appears to prefer his own company, the truth is that Henry tends to be a bit shy. He's often timid and finds himself in rather awkward situations. But his shyness isn't so bad that he purposely avoids people or refuses to talk to them, he just isn't the type to approach people with chitchat.
He appears stoic; hiding his emotions from the outside world, but deep down he's terrified of what's happening to him. He's confused and doesn't understand Walter's world and his plan, but pushes on, mostly commenting to himself about his current dilemma. It's given that Henry is a lonely man and possibly theorized that he was hurt in the past, so closing off his emotions to most people is a way of protecting himself. Although it's never been given that his is why he's the way he is, it can definitely explain some of his reluctance to be more vocal with people.
But get past that quiet exterior and you'll meet one of the sweetest people. He's extremely caring of his friends, nice to people -despite his timid nature- and genuinely cares for the well being of everyone. Even if he had been hurt in the past, that doesn't stop Henry from wanting to help. In fact, he'll even go out of his way to help complete strangers. This is seen when he tries to assist several of the others trapped in Walter's otherworld. Despite his uneasiness with Cynthia's sexual advances, or Richard's hostile behavior, Henry is eager to make sure they all get out. And then when he fails to save them, there is genuine sadness in his face as he helplessly watches them die.
As an artist, prominently a photographer, Henry is always watching rather than speaking. And actions always speak louder than words. His observation skills leave him with a desire to constantly learn new things, and Henry is always gathering information. Especially things that most people would probably look past. His detail to attention is stronger than most and he has a good eye for catching things most would ignore. As mentioned previously, these traits alone are most likely why he'd been chosen as the last sacrament.
Passive by nature, being forced into Walter's world has brought out a hidden strength in Henry and underneath that gentle exterior is a man determined to live. He's not willing to just give in and die, so he's had to show extreme cases of aggressiveness just to survive. He's fought to remain alive; something he's never really had to do before. On top of being forced out of his shell, Henry has been shown to be incredibly brave. He enters the hole in his bathroom -not knowing where it would lead him- braves the nightmarish scenarios, and even risks his life to protect the well being of others.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Henry is human, therefore he doesn't have any special powers.
ABILITIES
What Henry lacks in extroverted skills, he makes up for in introverted ones. He is a keen observer; able to pick up little details that most people wouldn't even bother to notice, he also has a natural eye for beauty. In fact, this makes him rather well versed in the arts, but he prefers to spend most of his time doing photography. Although never stated in game, it's theorized that Henry's job was that of a freelance photographer. On account of being quiet, Henry is a deep thinker. He's constantly questioning things and always looking for plausible explanations.
He can handle melee weapons fairly well, even the occasional firearm, and isn't too bad of a runner. He also seems to be able to remain calm in certain situations and will go out of his way to help someone in need.
WEAKNESSES
While empathy may be considered an ability, it is also a weakness. He has a tendency to care for people he befriends, especially if those situations that involve life or death scenarios. Unfortunately for Henry, he isn't much of a speaker and emotes mostly through actions rather than words. Because of this, some people may not feel as though they can trust him. Henry is also a curious fellow. On top of being a deep thinker, he constantly questions his state of mind while being targeted by Walter. While he doesn't appear it, Henry seems to have many self doubts.
And because he's human, Henry can be hurt like any other human.

He'd never been able to get rid of the nightmares.
Some nights were better than others. Some nights he didn't dream at all. But then there'd be those times where Henry found himself reliving the events in his head when Walter had chosen him for the final sacrifice and he'd been dragged down a spiraling hole and into the depths of Hell. A hell called Silent Hill. While these nightmares couldn't compare to the ones he'd been having while trapped in room 302, Henry still found himself waking in a cold sweat. Once the fear subsided and Henry distinguished reality from his subconscious, he easily calmed down. But this time when he woke, the fear never went away.
Unlike his previous waking up, Henry wasn't in his room. Surrounded in darkness and feeling as though suspended in the air, something tickled in his throat. When he tried to speak, he'd been unable to form coherent words and his throat went from a tickling to a burning. It felt as if something foreign had been placed inside. Henry struggled to get up, thinking that maybe he was having a lucid dream, but moving around, he'd continuously placed his hands on a hard, cold structure. Was he in a tube?
With his vision already obstructed in the darkness, Henry's other senses begin to fade and not realizing that he'd passed out, when he comes to again, he's been transported to an almost blinding white room. Eyes adjusting slowly, Henry sees that he's in some sort of hospital. It's clean, too clean, and it scares Henry more than the darkened tube he'd first woken in. Frantically getting up and looking around, Henry notices a number printed on his arm. It doesn't go away.
The fear is rising in him, but he'd woken up in many unfamiliar places before, so Henry bravely continues through those doors and into a room where he immediately spots a locker with his number. Lost, confused and frightened, Henry opens the locker to find several items he'd been familiar with, but his curiosity is taken by a strange device he'd never seen before. It seems simple to use and in no time, Henry turns on the device only to be surprised when a voice addresses him with further directions.
With a faded memory and unanswered questions, Henry abides to the voice and heads out in the general direction of the passenger quarters. He hopes someone will tell him where he is and what's going on.
